Happy Birthday today to Allison Jannay probably best known to all my readers as Claudia Jean "C.J." Cregg the Whitehouse Press Secretary who becomes Chief of Staff in the Bartlett administration on The West Wing.
So every birthday needs a song, or at least a little lip-synch. What do you mean you haven't seen C.J. do the Jackal.
She also played herself in Studio 60 On the Sunset Strip as Allison Jannay star of the West Wing. Many of the stars of the new show made comment on her being C.J. which is especially funny when it comes from Timothy Busfield (Cal Shanley S60 - Danny Concannon WW) , Bradley Whitford (Danny Tripp S60 - Josh Lyman WW) or Matthew Perry (Matt Albie S60 - Joe Quincey WW).
Of course there was a lot of poker playing scenes in The West Wing so what happens when the stars actually play on TV, for real. Well Richard Schiff has an Allison Jannay shaped space on his charm bracelet.

It's Friday ...so...Mister GrimsDALE
Yeah this week we lost the comic genius of Norman Wisdom. Even into his 80s he was still a genius of slap-stick and the one liners. But over the last six months he suffered a series of strokes.
However, one thing well never really did was heed his words in this song.
Basically because we couldn't help put laugh at Norman. Like this scene from A Stitch in Time.
His last role was only a few years ago when he was 91. The physicality may have been whithered by age, but the timing and the facial comedy was still there, as this clip shows.
So long Norman. Watch out Mr Grimsdale.

It's Friday...so...Farewell Oscar Nominees
This week we actually lost three Oscar nominees. Some were more widely publicised than others but all had a good innings. So today I'm going to celebrate some of their best work.
First up is triple nominee director Arthur Penn. He was nominated for Alice's Restaurant (1969), The Miracle Worker (1962) and this his opus 1967's Bonnie and Clyde here is the final scene where the titular anti-heroes meet their fate.
Whereas Penn died in Manhattan the next Oscar nominee was born there. In his later days he became the lovable survivor of the studios' star system. Tony Curtis was only nominated for an Oscar once for The Defiant Ones (1958), but was of course in that iconic homoerotic oysters and snails scene from the 1960 Spartacus. Finding a scene I could embed was difficult but I eventually got this classic scene from Houdini.
Finally, although she was known to recent audiences as the elder Rose from Titanic (1997) for which she earned her Oscar nomination (as the oldest ever at 87) Gloria Stuart had a career prior to retiring in 1946. As fans of the Rocky Horror Picture Show are all too aware Claude Rains was The Invisible Man (1933) but Gloria played his fiancée, often acting to nothing, but having to look at where the noise of Rains voice were supposed to come from if he wasn't invisible at the time.
Quite a collection of noteables have passed on this week.

It's Friday...so...here's what we've been up to this week
As many of you who follow me on Twitter or Facebook will be aware I've spent this week up in Belfast. My good friend Mícheál late on my birthday was rushed into A&E and the following evening while we were up visiting he was discharged and me and Andrew have been keeping an eye on him, catching him when he fell asleep in an upright position (whilst the anaesthetic was still wearing off) and generally keeping him company.
Of course we have found many ways to keep each other entertained and our collective spirits up. So here are some of the things we found that have done just that.
Many will know that Bagpuss was the third member of #operationevacuate taking a seat in the front of the cab of the van on the trip home. This week Bagpuss has joined the team here to look after Mícheál and we're hoping the mice on the mouse will help fix him.
We also were searching around for various things, one of Mícheál's friend came over and we found some 'subtitling' to Bollywood songs. This one we have stuck in our heads.
We've also had Mícheál complain about the number of female dancers doing a highland sword dance, so here is the real thing.

It's Friday...so a little Papal (Catholic) Humour
Oops. I almost forgot the get this sorted out for this week. However, as there is a Papal Visit on guess the theme.
First up from Father Ted who's have thought that Father Jack was beaten to promotion by a Polish guy called Karol.
And Billy Connolly a Weggie and a Catholic is pleased for the Churches stance on birth control.
And the lastly Dave Allen tells us about his first remembrances of his Catholic schooling.
Of course Dave Allen always ended his shows in an ecumenical way with "Goodnight, thank you, and may your God go with you" so I wish you that today.

It's Friday...so some sage words from Terry Jones
No not that Terry Jones, the pastor of the fifty members of the Dove World Outreach Center. No someone completely different yet who shares the same name as the man who had threatened that tomorrow he was going to have a bonfire of the Korans. Thankfully he changed his mind last night, maybe after hearing these sound words as others seemed to have no effect.
But words can be a problem and they dodnt have to be bound in a religious text to be so. That is especially true of the four letter tweetplitive that Patrick Harvey MP types when he returned to Holyrood to find that all the estate's computers have been updated to Windows 7. I mean for [uttered in Private as per Lib Dem press statement] sake. The press got a hold of it and it was like the Spanish Inquisition.
And finally I'll just slip this wafer thin clip in to end the set.

It's Friday...so Edwin Morgan
It's not often I start your Friday with a static image but here you are. 
Christ of St John of the Cross is the paiting by Salvidor Dali that inspired this poem by Edwin Morgan (which I cannot embed. It is an excuse to combine my favourite artist with The Scots Makar the national poet of Scotland who died last week.
He also wrote the poem read out by Liz Lochhead at the opening of the Scottish Parliament on 9 October 2004. Here it is:
Open the doors! Light of the day, shine in; light of the mind, shine out!
We have a building which is more than a building.
There is a commerce between inner and outer,
between brightness and shadow, between the world and those who think about the world.
Is it not a mystery? The parts cohere, they come together
like petals of a flower, yet they also send their tongues
outward to feel and taste the teeming earth.
Did you want classic columns and predictable pediments? A
growl of old Gothic grandeur? A blissfully boring box?
Not here, no thanks! No icon, no IKEA, no iceberg, but
curves and caverns, nooks and niches, huddles and

It's Friday...So 1812
Yes I know it is 2010, however in 1882 on this very day Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky unveiled his new composition Торжественная увертюра «1812 год» at the Church of Christ the Saviour in Moscow.
You know him better as Peter and the piece as the 1812 Overture.

It's Friday....So Patricia Neal Sood Still
Well it is Friday so I'm going to let you in on some of what I got up to this week and linked into what happened last weekend.
As Patricia Neal, who died during the week, starred in The Day the Earth Stood Still it is just cause to show you this which mentions her co-star Michael Rennie in the opening line.
As Mat Bowles who gets my hat tip says it isn't perfect in places but good none the less. But hey as it was the tenth anniversary of H2G2's Scottish Researchers Group last Saturday it is also an excuse to link to something I wrote earlier in another place.
Of course as well as H2G2 last weekend I also combined it with Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy, of course not for the first time. His jazzed up performance of the song that merges the two doesn't have the visuals but here is the opening version of the song that goes with the immortal toast.
In my post earlier this week I did mention that the Skye Boat Song was something that Rupert Murdoch didn't own, so I was considering posting a version of it here. After all, Edinburgh's Tattoo is on at the moment, you can hardly move on the High Street and if you are trying to get around at the wrong time of the evening at the top of the Royal Mile or thereabouts forget it. But I thought of something a little more upbeat was appropriate.

It's Friday so...Something for the Weekend
It has been a while since I did one of these, but as it is 5 pm and Friday you know what that means, time for the weekend to begin.
I'm going to take a look first off at some things related to some of this weeks news and blog posts. First I posted about the Ayotollah's decision that music was not to be promoted or taught in Iran. As One Ex-Widow said in the comments no doubt this Blurred Vision track will definitely not been on his list of revolutionary hymns and anthems.
One thing we learnt in Belfast this week with the passing of Alex Higgins is that they are still all snooker loopy.
But it is Friday night which a friend of mine on Facebook always declares as wine o'clock. Please forgive me if I partake in a little gin, I just hope I don't get soaked in it as I'm off to Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh to see this live.

It's Friday so...Tour de France 2010
Yes tomorrow is le Grand Depart in the 2010 Tour de France from Rotterdam. There will be cobbles, mountains and the thrills to come over the next three weeks.
So let's start with the classic* Kraftwerk song.
This year marks the hundredth year of the mountains as a part of the tour, yeah the Pyrenees were first included in the 1910 edition of the race. The Col du Tormalet is being climbed twice in this years tour. So here is one of the approaches to and descents from the summit quicker than the peleton will manage.
If your not convinced that the Tour is for you, bear in mind we have Brits in Mark Cavendish who will be competing for the sprints most days having won six stages last year and Bradley Wiggins going for a better place than his fourth overall last year as the head of the BSkyB team. Here are some of the highlights from last year.

It's Friday...so BP and World Cup
It's been a while since I did one of these but a few links have really got me in the mood.
First this one taking a sideways glance at the BP situation in the Gulf of Mexico.
Obviously I'm shocked by the environmental disaster that is unfolding, it really conflicts with my green credentials. Speaking of Green.
On the theme of the World Cup of course the story is the fellowship of the people playing those little plastic horns, aka Vuvuzeala's. They may sound like a hornets nest, maybe that is what they are.

It's Friday...so...what do you feel like?
Well it is that time on a Friday and 5pm so we know what that means. Time for a little indulgence as the weekend kicks in. Earlier this year while researching something else I came up with the first one of today's clips, found it coincided with Friday and so here you have it, a rather eclectic mix.
Earlier this year we celebrated the twentieth anniversary of his release but 49 years ago Nelson Mandela gave his first interview to the outside world about the struggle in South Africa. ITN's Brian Widlake is doing the questioning.
There have been close links between South Africa and India for generation. For a start M.K. Ghandi was once a lawyer in South Africa before he returned with the aim of freedom for his own people.
Therefore the fact that 20 years after Mandela gave that interview we also witnessed the assassination of the former President of India Rajiv Ghandi (no relation to the Mahatma) here is a pictorial illustration of his last minutes.
On a brighter note (maybe) to conclude today is also Leo Sayers 62nd birthday. What does that make you feel like?

It's Firday So......Michael Foot
I'm currently up in Perth for Scottish Lib Dem conference and about to have a really nice blog exclusive in the next few hours (indeed I'm preparing it now if all is going as planned). But tradition is tradition and every Friday at 5 it is time for a somewhat topical or relevant relax.
As Michael foot passed away on Wednesday aged 96 I think I'd use that as a theme.
First up a little cross party co-operation. Tory blogger Iain Dale, interviewed the former leader of the Labour party on his 90th Birthday. Here now on a Lib Dem Blog that podcast in two parts.
A little bit of Spitting Image where Foot was over scruffified.
For his 90th Birthday Foot was named in his beloved Plymouth Argyle's squad and given the number 90 shirt. In memory of Michael here are some highlights of the Green and White army.

It's Friday so...Winter Olympics
Today the winter Olympics kick off so how about a little look at some of those Olympic sports just not at they would be able to perform in that competition.
Of course we need that thing of beauty the BBC ident to kick us all off.
First up there is this video of Alexei Yagudin in 2005. I'm sure Wendy Fraser and Caron Lindsay with both appreciate the gratuitous shirt removal half way.
So moving on to the pairs and here we have the odd couple in 1993 at the World's gold medalist Kurt Browning and silver medalist Elvis Stojko 'paired' off with this.
Of course watching this it would be hard to believe Kurt Browning was once a World Champion, or then again maybe not.
Ok what about some British involvement. How about some Highland Ice Dancing from the British stars John and Sinead Kerr. Watch out for a rather unorhtodox lift that gets a gasp from the crowd at 2:41 into this and again at 3:01. Which seeing as my ex used to attend the same highland teacher as these two would be interesting to get her take on this.
So there you have it. Qualifying for the Ski Jumping is first up you can see that at 18:00 on the BBC Red Button, the Open Ceremonry kicks off live at 01:45 on BBC2 and the red button.

It's Friday...so..Superbowl
Yeah it is that time of the week again (only a bit later than normal I was too busy to pre-write it), but it is also Superbowl weekend. One of those odd occassions where the first four Roman numeral demarkers are used and only once each. It is Superbowl XLIV in Miami on Sunday night.
So first up lets look at some past Superbowl highlights.
Of course for many the hightlight is the half time show. Here are the guys from America's Whose Line is is Anyway with the worst possible Half Time Shows.
But one of the best had to be U2 in the 2002 Superbowl. Not only was it the world's biggest rockband put it managed to pay tribute to those who feel in the line of duty and merely from turning up to work or their flight on 9/11 only months before.

It's Friday....so...Tony Blair Pre-Chilcot
It is Friday and no doubt the event of the day is Tony Blair's appearnce before the Chilcot Inquiry. But here are a few things from before today.
First up is this contempt of Parliament bing carried out here, we may already know.
