Being able to see the approach to Edinburgh Airport from parts of the office there is a bizarre emptiness to the sky at the moment. There are not only no vapour trails but also no planes making their approach or take off from Edinburgh airport.
This is the result of the volcanic explosion in Iceland and although the thick doesn't affect mainland Britain, it may be marginal in the northern Shetlands, there is ash present in the air. International civil aviation is to declare a no fly zone as the ash, rock or glass in the air may affect aircraft engines. The rest of the UK will be affected by midday as the cloud heads towards the Netherlands and Belgium dissipating as it goes.
In the meantime enjoy the peace in the air.
